Scientists Retreat - ML

January 8 - 15, 2008

Retreat is Closed
Jointly sponsored by IMS and the Mind and Life Institute

This course has been organized by scientists, for scientists. Its goals are to help researchers in the mind sciences experience in-depth training in meditation and explore ways in which a rigorous and systematic approach to introspection can inform research. We consider this to be a rare opportunity to advance the scientific study of the human mind.

Two meditation techniques will be taught -- vipassana (mindfulness or insight) and metta (lovingkindness). Vipassana is an ancient method of introspection that readily conforms to the spirit of empirical science. It is simply a means of training the mind to be more keenly aware of sensory phenomena and the flow of thought. Metta meditation helps us cultivate an open and loving heart. These practices are non sectarian and do not require adopting Buddhism as a religion or dogma.

The IMS Scientists Retreat is designed for neuroscientists, cognitive scientists, psychologists and others who study the mind. It is open to graduate students, post-doctoral trainees and faculty who work in the broad area of the mind sciences.

The retreat begins on Tuesday evening, January 8, 2008 and will end Tuesday lunchtime, January 15, 2008. It will be conducted in silence, except for some discussion towards the end about various research projects. This will be led by scientists associated with the Mind & Life Institute.

Sliding Scale Fees: Sustaining: $575; Mid: $510 Base: $375; Scholarship: $210
